Professor Schaffner was a decent professor, but can improve his expectations on what content will be covered on the quizzes, midterms, and final. Homework was assigned daily and expected to be turned in at the end of every week so it is vital that you do the homework the day it is assigned, as he gives a fair amount and you will be up all night if you leave it until the last day. We used an online software to calculate most of our values for the homework, so the quizzes usually were not covering the same type of problems. Quizzes were also held at the end of every week and usually very different from the homework, as we cannot use the online software for quizzes, so many of the questions were conceptual, not doing calculations like the homework. We would cover lots of material before every midterm, but only one small portion would be focused on which was frustrating when you would study lots of information in preparation. Overall a decent class, I just wish that the things we were practicing for homework showed up on the exams. I would highly recommend doing the assigned reading with the homework as I found the text very clear to understand and immensely helped me in this class. You get a full sheet, one sided, for every quiz, midterm, and final so the class is very manageable just make sure you fully understand all the concepts behind the calculations.

Boring class, good teacher. He makes Applied Statistics for the Life Sciences as good as it can get. He is super cute and engaging. He always answers questions at the beginning of the class, which is super helpful. I got a C with mostly copying the homework and barely studying by making a note sheet for the quizzes. Some days I called Dr. Schaffner, "Dr. Shafter", but this is due to my lack of studying.

Schaffner is very enthusiastic and always smiles when he teaches! He is a fair grader. I found the class to be a little bit disorganized. He would tell us that we would have a midterm a few days before the exam. The notes are not always clear and lectures can be confusing. Schaffner is very patient especially when explaining a concept during office hours. It is hard to get help from him though because there are typically at least 5 students waiting to get help from him. It is nice that there is a student discussion board on PolyLearn where students can post questions about the homework. He is flexible and is willing to push back homework assignments and the project due date if students are having a hard time. Most of the weekly homework is assigned from the textbook. His grader would grade a few problems from each homework assignment. The exams were really hard and were not like the homework problems. Students have to really understand the concepts well. The final includes true or false questions.

Dr. Schaffner is a great teacher for stats. He teaches the material clearly but in a thorough way. Even though there is homework assigned every night, each assignment is pretty short and doable. He is very helpful in class and clarifies questions about homework and the material learned in class very well. Definitely try to get him if youre taking stats

Dr. Schaffner is a really good teacher despite the rather boring subject (at least to me, absolutely no real bio involved besides the examples in the book). If you had AP stats in high school the class is rather similar except you do all of your computations on a computer instead of using tables. The class is involved, there are homeworks due every week along with a quiz (these things really help your grade out though!). This really keeps you on top of everything though. There is also a small (easy) project that is a good grade booster and an easy A. For each quiz, the three midterms and the final you are allowed one full page of notes which is really nice because there are quite a few formulas and rules to remember. If you do have Dr. Schaffner, for studying for the midterms/final, I would recommend doing the unit summary exercises in the book (Do all the questions, not just the ones he assigns for homework). He likes to pull questions from them or make up similar questions. Also, he likes trick questions so take your time on the tests and really think about what is being asked! Overall, I would definitely recommend Dr. Schaffner for STAT 218!
